🧭 Map problems: which tool fixes what (Map Manager vs. Layouts)

Symptom-to-fix guide for course mapping: when a problem belongs in Map Manager, when it belongs in the Layout Builder, and which article has the steps.

Quick answer

Course mapping problems belong in one of two places. Map Manager is where the physical course is built and changed. This includes holes, tees, targets, fairways, pars, doglegs, position names and basket identifiers. The Layouts tab (also called the Layout Builder) is where you create layouts, which are playable configurations made from what already exists in Map Manager. It can also be used for a small number of edits that apply to one layout only. It can't create new parts of the course, and most changes can't be made there.

💡 Rule of thumb: If something about your course or map is wrong or missing (a hole, tee, target, fairway, par, name or position), fix it in Map Manager. That way the change applies to every layout. Use the Layout Builder to create a new layout, or to make a limited change that should apply to one layout only.

Symptom: the layout only lets me use the original holes, or fewer holes than I need

A layout can only use holes that are already mapped in Map Manager. The Layout Builder can't add new holes. Most often, the extra holes just haven't been added to the map yet.

  1. Add the holes in Map Manager with More actions → Add new holes.

  2. Add a tee and target to each new hole, plus a connecting fairway, then publish. The map can't be published while any hole needs review.

  3. Create a new layout that includes the new holes.

Once a layout is created, its number of holes can't be changed. To use a different number of holes, you'll need to create a new layout. See How do I change my course's hole count? and How do I create a new layout?

Symptom: I can't find, add or change a tee, target, fairway or hole from my layout

Which tool to use depends on what you want to change:

What you want to change

Add, reposition, reassign or delete a tee or target

Map Manager (repositioning can't be done in the Layout Builder)

Par for every layout, custom distance, doglegs on an existing fairway, hole notes

Map Manager

Tee/target position names, basket identifiers, tee types

Layout Builder

Exception: temporary layouts. You can add temporary tees, temporary targets and safari fairways directly in the Layout Builder, but only if you're building a layout you already know is temporary, such as a layout for a one-time event. For a normal, permanent layout, don't add these in the Layout Builder. Add permanent tees, targets and fairways in Map Manager instead. If it isn't clear whether your layout is temporary or permanent, check before choosing a tool. See Adding temporary and safari fairways.

⚠️ Can't see a tee or target on the map? It may just be hidden. Open the Layers button at the top right of Map Manager. Temporary, Safari and Event positions don't show when their toggle is off. Positions added in the Layout Builder are automatically labeled Temporary.

⚠️ Changed something in Map Manager, but your layout still shows the old value? There are a few common causes. First, the change may not be published yet. Changes in Map Manager only take effect after you publish them under Review and publish. Second, a par set directly on the layout overrides the par in Map Manager. Third, if a hole in your layout uses a fixed Position instead of a Physical target, it won't follow tee or target changes. Steps are in How to edit an existing layout. If none of these explain it, ask to talk to a person.

Symptom: my layout is inactive or says "Needs Attention"

These are two different problems:

  • Needs Attention means a tee, target or fairway that the layout used was deleted or made inactive. To fix it, edit the layout, make sure every hole has a tee and a target selected, and publish. See Why does my layout say "Needs Attention"?

  • Layout inactive on its own usually means its holes are set to a specific basket Position. That layout only stays active while a basket is in that exact spot. If the hole is set to Physical target instead, the layout stays active even when the basket moves.

  • Event-specific layouts deactivate automatically when their end date passes.

Symptom: I deleted something and now my layout is broken

Deleting a tee or target also removes the fairways connected to it, and any layout that uses it becomes inactive. The same happens when a tee or target is made inactive. If you haven't published the deletion yet, you can reverse it with Undo, Discard all changes or Revert to this change (all under Review and publish). If you've already published it, add back what's missing in Map Manager, then fix the layout using the steps under "Needs Attention" above.

⚠️ Deleting a hole, or moving a position more than 30 feet from where it was, resets the statistics for that hole. Read What does it mean to reset statistics? before you do either.

To fully remove a hole, delete its tee, its target, its fairway and then the hole itself. If you only want to delete one position, don't use the trash can next to the hole name, because that deletes the whole hole number.

Symptom: I want to delete everything and start over

It depends on how much of the map needs to change:

  • A few holes or positions: you can do this yourself in Map Manager by deleting the tees, targets and fairways involved. Before you publish, Undo can reverse a deletion. After you publish, it's permanent. See Managing tee and target positions.

  • A complete course redesign, where you want to wipe the map and use the guided Map My Course walkthrough again: ask to talk to a person and request a course map reset. A reset can't be undone. All course stats tied to the current map will be cleared, and round ratings and layout difficulties will have to rebuild over time. See Map your course.

Other things only our team can do

  • Combining holes from two separate courses into one layout (a person copies the mapping between courses).

  • Exporting GPS coordinates for every tee and target on a course. For one or two positions, you can copy them yourself from Advanced Settings when editing the position.
