A handicap is a number that represents a player's skill level. It displays as a Starting Score on the scorecard and leaderboard, and can be negative, positive, or zero. A handicap of -10 means a player typically shoots +10 on average; a handicap of +10 means a player typically shoots -10 on average. Handicaps help even the playing field so all participants have a fair chance to win.
Note: Handicaps and Starting Scores are two separate features. UDisc-generated handicaps are calculated automatically and can't be edited. Manual Starting Scores let admins set their own score adjustment instead, and are only available when handicap scoring is turned off. You can't use both at the same time.
How is a handicap calculated?
UDisc compares your league's scores against pre-calculated difficulty data for each hole to determine player skill level, then combines that with the chosen layout to generate an expected score. The handicap is a percentage of the difference between that expected score and par, typically 85–100%, adjusted per league.
A player's 5 most recent league rounds within the past year are used
Rounds must be singles format on Smart Layouts
Casual rounds, standalone event rounds, and rounds from other leagues don't count
Handicaps are rounded to the nearest integer for each event
A handicap earned in one league doesn't carry over to a different league or standalone event
Why do I (or a player) see a dash (–) instead of a handicap?
A dash means the player isn't yet eligible for a handicap — this is normal for new league members. After completing at least one singles round on a Smart Layout within the league in the past year, a handicap will be calculated and applied starting with the next event.
For admins: Events must be fully completed for their results to count toward future handicap calculations. If your next event is set to run less than 48 hours after your last one, head into your Leaderboard tab and manually complete your event so handicaps update in time.
Note: A common cause of a missing handicap is a duplicate account. If a player has used two different UDisc accounts across events — for example, playing under one account and then accidentally getting checked in under another — their rounds won't be combined, and they may not have enough qualifying rounds on either account to receive a handicap. Check that the same UDisc account was used across all of the player's past events. See How do I add players or teams to my league or event? for how to fix a player who checked in under the wrong account.
Where can players see their handicap?
Your starting score shows up in a few places:
At check-in — your starting score displays when you check into a handicap-enabled league event
On your scorecard — once your round starts, it appears at the top of the in-app scorecard
On the leaderboard — tap Leaderboard during or after the event to toggle between your handicap-adjusted total and your raw round score
Note: There's no historical handicap view. UDisc doesn't have a page showing your past handicaps or an average across events — your starting score is only visible in the context of an active or completed league event.
Can a handicap be manually adjusted?
No. Handicaps are automatically generated and can't be manually changed by admins or players.
For admins: If you want to assign your own score adjustments — for example, to create a custom handicap system — use the Starting Scores feature instead. Starting scores must be entered manually for each player and are only available when handicap scoring is turned off for the event. See How can I set starting scores for leagues or events?
How do I turn on handicaps for my league?
(For league admins) You can enable handicaps for all future league events in the Settings tab of your League tools. To turn on handicap scoring for an event that's already been created:
Tap the Events tab in your League tools
Select a scheduled event
Tap the Edit button in the upper-right
Scroll down and toggle on Handicap scoring
Tap Update event (or Update this and all following events)
Note: Handicaps are only available for one-round, singles format league events played on a Smart Layout. They're not available for team rounds.
Why isn't handicap scoring available for an event?
There are two main reasons. If it's the league's first event, or players haven't completed enough qualifying rounds, the event won't be handicap-eligible yet — though this first event still collects the data needed for the next one. The other reason is using a Classic Layout — handicaps require a Smart Layout with stats turned on.
Does handicap scoring affect standings?
Yes, but it has its own view. If handicap scoring is enabled, both a Total Score tab and a Handicap tab appear in standings. Players who haven't yet qualified for a handicap won't have points displayed.
Can handicaps apply to only one division?
No. Handicap scoring is enabled at the event level and applies to all divisions — it can't be turned on for only certain divisions.
What happens if the league plays a different layout or course?
Handicaps will still be generated in most situations. League-member skill levels combine with the new layout's pre-calculated hole characteristics to produce handicaps. Players don't need to complete a round on the new layout first — their existing skill data from the league carries over.
My handicap doesn't look right, or didn't apply to my final score
Handicaps are calculated automatically based on recent performance in that specific league. Players should contact their league director first, who can review event history. If the issue persists, the league admin can ask to talk to a person in the chat — include the league name, affected event dates, the player's name, and a screenshot of the scorecard or starting score in question.
